Scenery along Rock Creek Trail
I returned yesterday afternoon from my family vacation to Mammoth Lakes, located in the Eastern Sierra southeast of Yosemite. Mammoth Lakes is home to the famous Mammoth Mountain ski resort. It's a great little town, surrounded by some of the most beautiful wildlife and mountain scenery anywhere.
We took several hikes in Devil's Postpile National Monument, Inyo Craters and Rock Creek, swam and kayaked in June Lake, went horseback riding to Rainbow Falls, caught a few movies, read several books (see my latest review) and played games with my kids. It was fantastic, relaxing and fun. Even the five-hour drive past Mono Lake and Bridgeport, through Alpine County on the way to and from was enjoyable.
When my wife and I planned this vacation three months ago, little did I realize that it coincided with the Democrat National Convention. For the past week, I watched no news, listened to no talk radio, read no national news -- which was presumably nothing but typical rah-rah hate Bush speak. (This is probably one of the reasons why I feel so peaceful and rested.)
If your looking for a great getaway -- winter or summer -- head for Mammoth.
