No knockout punch

Chicago Sun-Times - Novak

Misleasing statements by John Kerry in the first debate:

Kerry renewed his false charge that the retirement of Gen. Eric Shinseki as U.S. Army chief of staff was forced after he said 'hundreds of thousands of troops' would be needed for the occupation of Iraq. In fact, his retirement on schedule was announced before the general made that statement.

Kerry would not rule out preemptive strikes, but said they had to face 'a global test.' That played into Bush's hands to accuse Kerry of putting national interests below international concerns.

Kerry in private has called Bush a liar. He avoided that in the debate, cautiously challenging the president's credibility but not going too far.

Kerry tried to pin North Korea's acquisition of nuclear weapons on Bush, when in fact Pyongyang's first such devices came during Bill Clinton's presidency.
