In a letter to CA radio station managers, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lawyers demanded the stations immediately pull off the air a 60-second ad paid for by the CA Teachers Association (CTA) falsely criticizing the governor’s education funding proposals. In the letter ... attorney Thomas Hiltachk calls CTA President Barbara Kerr’s claims “false” that Gov. Schwarzenegger is proposing to cut school funding. Hiltachk’s charge is supported by a recent Sacramento Bee story that stated, "The ad is inaccurate when it says Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts school spending. In fact, the Governor’s proposed budget increases school funding for K-12 by $2.4 billion. While overall state spending will increase by 4.2 percent, education spending is slated to increase by 6.9 percent."
These figures are confirmed by a report issued by the state’s independent Legislative Analyst’s Overview of the Governor’s Budget. The letter also disputes claims made by the CTA about education cuts over the past three years.
Hiltachk noted, "Every measure of education spending has been steadily increasing over the last three fiscal years."
